Dr Lau Peng Choong is a Consultant General and Upper GI Surgeon in UMMC/UMSC. He started his career in surgery in Penang after graduating from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2001. After serving the community in Penang, he joined the UMMC in 2005 and completed his Masters of Surgery in 2009. He currently serves as an Associate Professor at the University of Malaya. His subspecialty interest is in Upper Gastrointestinal and Minimally Invasive Surgery. His training includes a fellowship in Advanced Gastric Cancer Surgery in Seoul, South Korea plus he also did a year of clinical fellowship in Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery in Coventry, United Kingdom under the sponsorship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Dr Lau’s main area of interests are in upper gastrointestinal cancers, bariatrics and complex abdominal hernia repair. He also has a keen interest in new and emerging technologies. He was an early adoptor of using flourescent imaging in surgery in Malaysia. Together with the Gastroenterology Unit of University Malaya Medical Centre, they initiated the POEM (Per-Oral Endoscopic Myotomy) service in the country in 2015 as a new minimally invasive treatment option for achalasia.
Dr Lau has helped trained many young doctors as well as surgeons in the country since joining UM. He is currently the Honarary Treasurer of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Society of Malaysia (PENSMA). He is also the council member for Malaysian Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Society(MUGIS), Society of Endoscopic Laparoscopic Surgery of Malaysia (SELSMA) and the Malaysian Metabolic and Bariatric Surgical Society (MyMBS).
He is also an active member in the College of Surgeons of the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia(AMM), Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia(ELSA), Asia Pacific Hernia Society(APHS) and International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorder (IFSO).


Dr Simon Wong

Dr. Simon Wong is the president-elect of Asia-Pacific Metabolic & Bariatric Surgical Society (APMBSS). He is also the chairman of the Hong Kong Society of Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (HKSMBS), and treasurer of the Hong Kong Association of Study of Obesity (HKASO). He represents Hong Kong at the International Federation of Surgery of Obesity (IFSO) and its Asia-Pacific Chapter. Since 2008, Dr. Wong has been the consultant surgeon in the Upper Gastrointestinal & Metabolic Surgery Division at the Prince of Wales Hospital. He was also appointed as the Honorary Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).
Dr. Simon Wong graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1991 and received his post-graduate surgical training at the Prince of Wales Hospital. In 1995, he received his fellowships at the College of Surgeon of Hong Kong and Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, Scotland. He became a member of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine in 1999. In the year 2000, he was the visiting scholar at the Royal Brisbane & Princess Alexandra Hospitals in Queensland, Australia.
Dr. Wong’s main clinical and research interests are in the field of bariatric surgery, minimal invasive upper gastrointestinal surgery, and advanced therapeutic endoscopy. He has published more than 50 articles in local and international journals and has delivered lectures in various conferences around the world. In 2002, Dr. Simon Wong established the first multidisciplinary combined obesity clinic in Hong Kong and is currently in charge of the Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery Service at the Prince of Wales Hospital, CUHK. He is also involved in the training of young surgeons. Dr. Wong was appointed as the editor of the CUHK Jockey Club Minimal Invasive Surgical Skill Center (MISSC) where he is in charge of the web-based education platform—eSurg (www.esurg.net) which provides online lectures and surgical videos on various updated minimally invasive surgical techniques.
Dr. Wong lives with his wife Vivian, in a small apartment, like most Hong Kong locals do. He is a father of two teenage girls, Sami and Victoria, and his whole family loves traveling and sports. As a late learner of snowboarding and cycling, he challenges the integrity of his skeleton every year in the powdery snow-heaven of Japan, and by cycling to work everyday (he claims). He is also a member of an amateur football team and is the only forward player to score a goal in the senior-alumni league of his high school from 2015 to 2017.


Assoc Prof Dr Zubaidah Nor Hanipah

Associate Professor Dr Zubaidah Nor Hanipah is a former Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) medical student, graduated in 2002. She joined UPM as a surgical trainee lecturer after serving the Ministry of Health for 4 years. Currently, she works at the Department of Surgery as a Clinical Consultant in General Surgery, Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery. She is a member of the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia, Malaysia Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery Society (MyMBS) and International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO). At present she is the secretary of the Society of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgery Malaysia (SELSMA).
Clinical research is vital in improving training as well as patient care and surgical outcomes. Throughout her academic years with UPM, she has endeavored to maintain a balance between the academic scholarly work and clinical practice. The majority of her research has focused on the outcome of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery in patients with obesity and metabolic disorders. She also has a few book chapters’ publication on Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery.


Dr Manish Baijal
Director, Max Institute of Minimal Access, Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery

Dr Manish Baijal worked as a Consultant in the Minimal Access and Bariatric Surgery Center at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, prior to joining Max Healthcare as a Senior Consultant Surgeon. Dr Baijal has a specialization in Bariatric surgery from the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, USA, has been part of the core surgical team at Institute of Minimal Access, Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery since its inception 1996. Dr.Baijal was instrumental in the creation of a set of 15 educational CD-ROMs in 'Minimal Access Surgery – Basic & Advanced Procedures’ that were released by His Excellency Shri K R Narayanan, the President of India on July 15, 2002.He played an active role in compiling, streamlining and editing scientific content of the manual titled ‘Minimal Access Surgery – Guidelines & Recommendations’ endorsed by Ministry of Health, Medical Council of India, National Board of Examinations, Indian Medical Association and Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo- surgeons. He has been Teaching Faculty for NBE (DNB) & EIES.
He along with his team has a rich experience of more than 80,000 laparoscopic procedures over a period of two decades. He is currently Director at Max Institute of Minimal Access, Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, Max Hospital Saket, New Delhi.
Along with performing high end complex laparoscopic surgical procedures, he has keen interest in teaching & training. He has been involved in training surgeons from across the globe in the field of laparoscopic and bariatric surgery.

Dr Ali Aminian
Director, Bariatric and Metabolic Institute Associate Professor of Surgery, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine

Ali Aminian, M.D. is Director of Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. He is Associate Professor of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, and is licensed by the State Medical Board of Ohio. His clinical interests include gastrointestinal surgery, advanced laparoscopic surgery, and specifically surgery for severe obesity, diabetes, and metabolic disease.
As an academic surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus, Dr. Aminian has been involved in clinical and experimental research on the role of minimally invasive gastrointestinal procedures in management of obesity, diabetes, metabolic disease, and fatty liver disease. He has an outstanding record of peer-reviewed publications (>200) in high impact journals including New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Diabetes Care, and Annals of Surgery. His studies have been widely covered by the media such as New York Times, Wall Street Journal, TIME, Reuters, Forbes, among the others. Prior to joining the Clinic, he served as Assistant Professor of Surgery at Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Iran for 6 years.

Prof Dr Philip Schauer
Professor, Metabolic Surgery Director, Bariatric and Metabolic Institute, Pennington Biomedical Research Institute of Louisiana State University

Dr. Philip Schauer is Professor of Metabolic Surgery and Director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at Pennington Biomedical Research Institute of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He is formerly Professor of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. He is past president of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). He is former Chair and founder of Obesity Week (2012-present) and Co-Chair of the Diabetes Surgery Summit (2007, 2015, 2019).
Dr. Schauer's clinical interests include obesity, diabetes and metabolic surgery. He has performed more than 8000 operations for severe obesity and diabetes. His research interests include the pathophysiology of obesity and type 2 diabetes, and outcomes of metabolic surgery. He has authored more than 350 scientific papers, 60 textbook chapters, and 3 textbooks related to obesity, bariatric/metabolic surgery and gastrointestinal surgery with more than 20,000 citations. He is principal investigator of the STAMPEDE trail comparing medical and surgical treatment of diabetes published in New England Journal of Medicine (2012, 2014, 2017) with more than 3500 citations and numerous awards from American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, NIH and Wall Street Journal. He has been principal investigator on 3 NIH funded studies evaluating surgical treatment of diabetes and obesity. He is past chairman of the Bariatric Surgery Section of The Obesity Society (TOS). He has been a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Obesity, Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases and Obesity Surgery as well as 3 other scientific journals. He has been an invited speaker for more than 200 international lectures on the subject of metabolic surgery. He is founder of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Symposium (MISS) now in its 20th year. He has trained more than 200 postgraduate surgeons and 100 fellows in advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgery (3 Presidents of ASMBS). He holds 4 patents for medical devices. He is the recipient of the Cleveland Clinic 2015 Sones Award – highest honor for scientific innovation at the Cleveland Clinic. He is the recipient of the SAGES Pioneer in Surgical Endoscopy Award 2018.
